Alpha-Lipoic Acid Research
Lipoic acid is found in every cell in the body. It is a powerful anti-oxidant, which reduces free radical damage in the cells, and functions in both fat and water. Lipoic acid is a key part of the metabolic process that turns glucose into energy.
Diseases such as diabetes, liver cirrhosis, and artherosclerosis are associated with low levels of lipoic acid. There are numerous studies showing benefits of taking Alpha-Lipoic acid. In a double-blind placebo controlled study in 2006 of 181 people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, the subjects given lipoic acid showed significant improvement over the placebo group. In another study following 73 people with diabetes, who had symptoms caused by nerve damage to the heart, the subjects that were treated with 800mg daily of lipoic acid showed significant improvement over those treated with placebo.
